Will learning ASL delay spoken language? This is a common concern, and I can assure you- both from personal experience and having researched this topic- using signs with young children improves their vocabulary, interest in communicating and confidence in being understood.
These three things added together generally cause a child to start speaking earlier. An added benefit? Many new studies show that children who sign have enhanced literacy skills, as well.
How much time should be spent at home "teaching" signs?Practicing with your child should be incorporated as part of your normal, daily routines. There is no need for additional specific time at home. Including Signing Time DVDs, books and flashcards in their schedule will also increase the speed at which your family learns ASL.
I also offer playgroups and grandparent/ caregiver workshops to help those who help you! Even moms who work full time can effectively share this intimate way of communicating with their child(ren).
Is one session (4 weeks) enough? You will learn the basics in 4 weeks. I highly recommend continuing to interact with a group of signing children (I do set up playgroups with "graduates" of my classes) and will continue to offer more opportunities for you to learn and grow in your ability to... ...communicate and connect with your child. |
