As a homeschool mom with tagalongs, I have found support groups, mommy reviews/opinions, mom bloggers and e-mail lists to be invaluable resources. I look forward to sharing some of that here. I also welcome "guest" posts if you have information to share with other mothers.

Happy Halloween

Barefoot Books are treasured tomes in our happy home. We enjoy the celebration of imagination, the tradition of storytelling and the brilliance of bright art. I am excited to be introducing a Barefoot Books story time to my regular offerings, where ASL will be incorporated along the the music and movement that we have come to adore.

Halloween is just around the corner- this year we are giving out spider rings, mini card decks and glow bracelets, the night may be scary but our next visit to the dentist doesn't have to be.

Seasonal Traditions

Children delight in routine and ritual. My family celebrates 100 Days of Holidays with a journal we have created to help us. Starting on Sept 22 (usually the Autumn Equinox) we explore customs and traditions, observe occasions and prepare for parties!

Each year we jot down any recipes, crafts supplies or other resources we use, as well as friends and family who we share these experiences with. We also tuck in templates and patterns used in creating decor, cards and gifts.

So far this year we set up an autumn nature table, sent a love note on Love Note Day (September 25th), made a Christmas list and decorated with fall leaves (both real and construction paper- one of the templates we save).

We have "weeded" through our fall fashions (donating what doesn't fit),delivered a happy fall greeting to friends, participated in fall fairy fun and enjoyed apple cider on National Mulled Cider Day (Sept 30).

We froze apple juice into popsicles for those last few hot days, got pumpkin butter from Trader Joes, and made fall leaf wontons. If you would like to learn more or get more detailed information on any of these rituals or observances please contact me!

My sensitive child

J-cake's favorite sign for the longest time was "helicopter". About a year ago, which would have made her almost 20 months, she began to scream uncontrollably many afternoons during her nap.

She would sob and snuggle into me, and I thought she was having bad dreams. There would be other times during the day that she would come streaking in from the back patio in pure terror.

Then one day when we were outside and a helicopter flew over, she came running towards me, frightened and crying. I signed "helicopter" to her- she stopped crying and copied me very seriously.

The next day she woke up crying again, but when I came into her room she quickly quieted and started repeatedly signing "helicopter". Her crib was near a window, and from where I was in the house during her naps I didn't hear what was causing her her to wake up. It seemed that knowing what it was really helped her.

A few days later we were outside again and I signed "loud" helicopter as one flew over.

This became one of her most used signs, and I can never underestimate the value of knowing when it was a just a "loud" gardner, or truck, or motorcycle or street sweeper. Because the shrieks my little one would let out would have me fearing loss of limb!

She is now 2 3/4 and she still often runs to the window when she hears a helicopter. Above she is seen signing her version of "helicopter".
